Twenty per cent of adults are affected by damaged or visible veins. Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure commonly used as a varicose or spider vein treatment. The treatment is minimally invasive and can ease itching, cramping, discolouration and pain.

How sclerotherapy works

Once injected, the sclerosant travels along the vein, causing the walls to collapse. The collapsed veins are then reabsorbed into the body, removing the damaged vein. Sclerotherapy can be used in combination with vascular lasers to bring about the best treatment outcomes.

Treatment process

First, we thoroughly cleanse the skin surrounding the veins. We inject the medication directly into the vein using a strict technique to avoid infection, as well as a special magnifier and light. We apply compression to the area immediately.

The site around the veins and the surrounding skin is thoroughly cleaned while the medication is prepared for injection. Afterwards, we quickly clean the area and help you pull on compression stockings.

Treatment areas

Almost all areas where visible veins can be seen can be treated with sclerotherapy. It is typically used for spider and varicose veins in the legs or upper thighs. This treatment is also suitable for the spider veins that can sometimes be seen on the sides of the nose and feet.

Sclerotherapy treatment results & longevity

Sclerotherapy results are cumulative and start to appear after the first treatment. A review is conducted 3 weeks post-procedure or sooner if needed, and treatment is repeated at 5-6 week intervals.

Each damaged vein typically requires a minimum of 2 or 3 rounds of treatment. Some stubborn veins may require further treatment rounds before a complete resolution is achieved.

When resolution has been achieved, results generally last for several years. There is a slight possibility for future recurrence of the varicose veins.

Complications

Complications can occur on rare occasions due to inadequate compression following treatment. It is advised that the treated area be compressed for at least two weeks following each treatment. Some possible complications include brown staining of the treated vessels and infection or ulcers around the injection sites.
