Laser treatments

Q Switch Pico Laser

Switch Pico Laser is a laser device (engineered by Cutera) that uses a quality Switch (Q) to deliver powerful laser pulses within a very short pulse duration (a picosecond). It’s high intensity uses ultra-short pulses – in fact, one trillionth of a second.

This device is in a special category of lasers and uses the Nd:Yag garnet (crystals) to generate the laser light.

Treatment areas

The treatment is suitable for almost all face and body areas; the laser can target pigmentation within a specific layer of the skin. This treatment is best for:

  • Melasma
  • Pigmentation
  • Tattoo removal
  • Non– ablative rejuvenation – especially in Asian skin.

Treatment process

Once all the safety precautions are followed, including eye shields and corrective glasses, the area is anaesthetised and then treated with the laser light. Treating one area (e.g. the face) usually takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

The treated area is usually red for the first 24 hours and can feel like mild sunburn. Following the treatment, it is advised to avoid the sun and wear SPF 50+.

Pigmentation will usually darken initially for the first 2-3 days and then start to fade after.

Results and treatment duration

The initial treatment usually requires a minimum of 2-3 sessions about 3-4 weeks apart. Once the desired effect is achieved, one-off treatments may be required at 12-18 monthly intervals to maintain results.

How it works

The ultra-short bursts of energy delivered by the laser can disrupt the cells that contain pigment within the skin. Because each pulse is a picosecond, the laser can specifically target the pigment in different layers of the skin, even in darker skin types, without affecting the natural pigment.

CO2 Laser

A CO2 laser treatment is considered ‘the gold standard’ of all laser treatments. It uses a carbon dioxide gas to emit laser light that can treat the skin. It effectively restores and rejuvenates the skin, including fine lines, pores and textural improvements.

Treatment areas

Nearly all areas of the face and body can be treated with this laser. It’s most helpful for:

  • Scars (including Keloid)
  • Acne
  • Glandular Swellings – particularly of the nose
  • Xanthelasma

This laser can also treat lumps, bumps and moles on the skin.

Treatment process

The area to be treated is anaesthetised and thoroughly cleaned before treatment.

The laser treatment is applied along with cool air to the area to improve comfort. The entire treatment takes between 10-15 minutes.

Results & treatment longevity

After the treatment, the skin may appear red, like mild sunburn. 2 to 3 days following treatment, you may notice some skin flaking in the treated area. Once this process settles in the week after treatment, you will see results.

For optimal results, it’s recommended you have 2 or 3 initial treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart.

The results are usually visible for up to 18 months when maintenance treatment can be administered. Talk to Dr Sam and the team at Samara Aesthetics to be fully informed on your procedure.

How it works

The fractionated laser causes microscopic areas of thermal damage, penetrating the top layer of the skin. This stimulates collagen production, and the treated area of damaged skin is replaced by new cells.

Complications

At Samara Aesthetics, CO2 lasers are only administered by highly skilled and trained doctors; therefore, there are few complications. There is a minimal chance of burns or scarring if not administered by a trained professional. Feel free to discuss any concerns with Dr Sam at your consultation.

IPL  & Vascular

IPL and vascular treatment has been used for decades to treat skin damage and blemishes. The laser uses a concentrated beam of light, converted to heat and targets particular areas. It leaves the surrounding skin undamaged.

Treatment areas

Most areas of the face and body can be safely treated. This laser is best suited for:

  • Spider naevi – swollen blood vessels just below the skin’s surface
  • Varicose veins
  • Rosacea
  • Skin redness – from sun damage

Treatment process

As with most laser treatments, eye goggles are provided for your protection during the procedure. The treatment area is then thoroughly cleaned and numbed. Cooling air is also applied to the area during treatment to enhance comfort.   The procedure itself only takes a few minutes.

Results and treatment longevity

The area treated will often require 2-3 treatments to achieve a good outcome. This is done 3-5 weeks apart, so visible results can be observed in around 2 months. Maintenance treatments will likely be required at 12-18 month intervals to sustain and prolong visual results.

How it works

IPL and vascular treatment uses a vaporised dye to generate laser light energy of 595 wavelengths. It focuses a light beam at blood vessels beneath the skin. This laser light is particularly suited to target red blood vessels and smaller vessels of the body.

Complications

Following treatment, the area is likely to be redder than usual for a few days and then start to fade. There are very few complications associated with this procedure, however, all lasers must be operated by trained and qualified doctors and this is no exception.

Venus Versa

Venus Versa is a multiplatform device that can deliver multiple non-surgical treatments for various face and body skin conditions. It is suitable for all skin types. The Venus Versa can target pigmented areas and lesions, resulting in brighter skin. It also encourages and stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen.

Treatment areas

Venus Versa is safe and effective for all areas of the face and body. Venus Versa is particularly suited for:

  • Sun damage
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Poikiloderma and other sun-damaged skin conditions
  • Skin tightening

Treatment process

As with all light and laser treatments, you’ll wear safety glasses (during the procedure) for maximum eye protection. The treatment area is thoroughly cleaned and numbed. Then, the application of energy to the treatment area is completed while maintaining skin cooling with a cooling device.

Each procedure will normally take less than 20 minutes.

Results & treatment longevity

The area may appear slightly red and inflamed for between 24-48 hours after treatment. Results are visible as the area heals, but 2-3 initial treatments are recommended to achieve the best results. Following this, you may require a yearly maintenance schedule to maintain results.

How it works

As a multi-platform device, the Venus Versa combines both IPL (intense pulsed light) and laser technology. It has the option of several multipolar settings, including radiofrequency, as well as IPL, for treating various skin conditions. With so many options, the device can target energy to all layers of the skin (either just under the surface or deeper layers) to treat a variety of skin conditions.

Complications

There are very few complications. All laser treatments are completed by the doctors and trained professionals at Samara Aesthetics, but please discuss any queries with Dr Sam at your initial consultation.

Fraxel

Fraxel is a non-ablative fractional laser used to treat ageing and damaged skin. Non-ablative means that the laser can repair the skin and improve pigmentation and texture without causing injury to the skin’s surface. This procedure treats the skin in microscopic treatment zones, allowing for a much faster healing time.

Treatment areas

Treatment is effective for almost all areas of the face and the body, but Fraxel is particularly suited for:

  • sun damaged skin
  • tone and textural irregularities
  • mild to moderate wrinkles
  • actinic keratosis
  • melasma

Treatment process

Your initial consultation with Dr Sam and the Samara medical and cosmetic clinics’ experienced and qualified staff will ensure the treatment is suitable for you and your desired outcome.

Before treatment, the area is numbed and thoroughly cleaned. The laser is then passed over the treatment area, along with topical cooling air for your comfort. Patients sometimes experience a mild prickling sensation during the procedure, which usually takes 15-25 minutes.

Results and treatment longevity

Results can be seen clearly within a few days after treatment. The treated area will continue to improve for up to 6 months. The results will last for a minimum of 12 months when it’s typically recommended to have further treatment.

How it works

Fraxel uses thousands of tiny laser beams to penetrate the middle layer of the skin and helps to stimulate the production of the body’s natural collagen while repairing damaged tissue.

The procedure uses two different wavelengths depending on the area to be treated.  1550 nm wavelength uses an erbium fibre and penetrates deeply into the skin to effectively treat deep lines and scarring. 1927nm wavelength uses a thulium fibre, doesn’t penetrate as deeply and is best suited for repairing skin texture and tone.

Complications

Fraxel non-ablative laser treatment is a safe and effective way to improve damaged skin. As with all lasers, Fraxel is a medical-grade laser and should only be used by a trained physician. Working with Dr Sam, the initial consultation will ensure you receive the correct procedure for your desired outcome. The skin can be red and inflamed for a few days after treatment, but this is part of the healing process and is not considered a complication.  Dr Sam and his team are available to discuss any of your questions or concerns.
