For dramatically smoother, firmer, even-looking skin… (Without extensive downtime.)
Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing in summary:
• Fractional CO2 laser directs focused, short, pulsating light beams at the skin. This removes the outer layers of damaged skin, layer by layer.
• This controlled micro-damage triggers the growth of new collagen fibres. This results in tighter, smoother, younger-looking skin, which will be visible within 2 to 3 months.
• Fractional laser ablates only a ‘fraction’ of the skin’s surface, while non-fractional CO2 laser ablates the entire surface, so recovery time for the former is faster, and the latter is longer.
• The fractional laser can be used on specific areas with damage or scars or over the entire face.
• Recovery time is around two weeks.
• After your procedure, there will be temporary redness, swelling, itching and tenderness. These symptoms should subside within a couple of days.
• Patients must follow after-care instructions carefully.
• Several treatments may be required for deep scarring or severely sun-damaged skin.
Fractional CO2 laser is considered ‘the gold standard’ of all laser treatments for resurfacing and rejuvenation. A powerful tool, the fractional Co2 laser can target concerns such as wrinkles, acne, stretchmarks and surgical scars — and achieve firmer, smoother skin. Not only that, it’s a popular treatment for younger patients who would like significant skin rejuvenation in fewer visits.
How it works:
The CO2 laser uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. It uses targeted beams of light to microscopic laser spots on the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue intact, so healing is faster. The spots targeted by laser cause tiny wounds in the deeper layers, creating a natural healing response. This healing response boosts collagen and elastin production, vital to maintaining youthful, elastic skin. It’s also a highly effective way of treating wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, uneven skin colouring, stretch marks, and all types of scars, including acne and surgical scars.
The CO2 fractional laser is also renowned for its skin tightening and rejuvenation benefits, promoting smoother, firmer, more youthful-looking skin.
What skin types are suitable for fractional CO2 laser?
Not all skin types are suitable for fractional CO2 laser. Typically, patients with fairer skin are more suitable, while those with darker skin tones are more suited to Pico or fraxel laser treatments.
What does the treatment feel like?
There can be some pain associated with laser treatment. Therefore, before your treatment, we will apply a medical-grade numbing cream or medication to block the pain sensation effectively. We’ll also use a cooling fan to help diminish any uncomfortable heat sensations. Patients often report sensations that feel like pins and needles and a feeling of tightness to the skin.
Can fractional CO2 laser be used around the eyes?
Fractional CO2 laser can be used around the eyes and eyelids to help target early signs of ageing, such as crows feet of fine lines. The advantage of CO2 laser is that it is effective for treating eyelid laxity and reducing both upper and lower eye bags. It also helps improve the appearance of dark under-eye circles.
How many treatments are required?
If you have a CO2 laser for scar removal, one treatment is usually enough. However, for ongoing benefits when addressing lines, wrinkles and skin laxity, a course of maintenance treatments at intervals between 6 to 18 months may be required.
How will I feel after my treatment?
You’ll need to expect some discomfort after your fractional CO2 laser treatment. Patients typically experience significant redness and swelling – a bit like severe sunburn. If you have full face and eyelid treatments, you’ll need to arrange transportation home, as it is not recommended to drive immediately after your procedure. If you need pain relief, usually, Panadol will be all that is required. Several days of rest at home are also advised for recovery.
How will my skin feel and look after the fractional CO2 laser procedure?
After recovering from your treatment, your skin should appear visibly rejuvenated. It will be smoother and have a more even texture as the laser helps to reduce the appearance of pores and other skin infections. Fine lines and wrinkles will typically diminish, and you may see significant improvements for those with scarring (e.g., acne or surgical scars). Overall, your skin will appear fresher and more youthful -looking with more clarity and firmness.
NB: it’s vital you maintain a good skincare routine before treatment as this is vital for long-lasting results. How long until I see results?
Typically, patients see results after two weeks, with more visibly improved results appearing 2 to 3 months after treatment.
